Welcome!
Welcome to the Office of Sustainability. At NAU the entire campus community works to create a Culture of Sustainability through our daily living, learning, reasearch, and advocacy actions. As part of the NAU Strategic Plan, sustainabilty has become a common thread throughout the functioning of the University from scholarship to operations to community stewardship.
NAU's Office of Sustainability is dedicated to tracking, reporting, and implementing sustainability initiatives which help to support President Haeger's 2020 Carbon Neutrality Goal. Our aim is to work collaboratively with local, national, and international partners to develop sound initiatives that support the university's sustainability mission and improve the social, ecological, and economic environments that surround us.
Mission and Goals
It is the mission of the Office of Sustainability to make NAU a global model for sustainable operations by living off the earth's income and not its capital.
Our goals include:
- To develop and implement a carbon mitigation plan that creates a trajectory for carbon neutrality by 2020 in accordance with the American College and University President's Climate Committment
- To engage in on- and off-campus outreach as a means to educate the community about sustainability both at NAU and in a global context
- To offer hands-on learning opportunities to students at NAU interested in sustainability issues on campus
Northern Arizona University understands that greenhouse gas emissions are contributing to climate change, and the effects of climate change are already visible. In 2007, President John D. Haeger became a charter signatory to the American College and Universities Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). The University has established an Office of Sustainability to direct and coordinate the development and implementation of the university's Climate Action Plan.
